Can ultrasound attenuation measurement be used to characterise grain statistics in castings?

چکیده

Industrial inspection protocols are qualified using mock-ups manufactured according to the same procedure as plant part. For coarse-grained castings, known for their low inspectability, relying on becomes particularly challenging owing variability of grain properties among components. Consequently, there is a keen interest in capability verify whether size component under test matches qualification specification in-situ. This paper investigates potential an attenuation measurement assessing ultrasonic inspectability components procedures practical setting. The experimental part study focuses industrial Inconel 600 mock-up with spatially varying attenuation, measured across entire sample immersion tank. Three zones distinctly different attenuations were examined metallography, which allowed calculating classical histograms and two-point correlation functions. one zones, we synthesised microstructure statistical numerically simulated propagation ultrasound grain-scale finite element model. results showed good agreement experiment, lead several suggestions reasons discrepancy, statistics being most likely. A parametric study, followed, depicted effect mean standard deviation-to-mean ratio log-normal distribution its frequency dependence. Most notably, demonstrated non-uniqueness relationship between parameters attenuation. We suggested that length calculated from single exponential fit function more robust metric describing this context, can be obtained lengths estimated second-order approximation model three studied yielded acceptable accuracy. concluded could replace average settings, it retains information than allows linking measurements established theoretical models demonstrates.

Can ultrasound be used to stimulate nerve tissue?

BACKGROUND The stimulation of nerve or cortical tissue by magnetic induction is a relatively new tool for the non-invasive study of the brain and nervous system. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for example, has been used for the functional mapping of the motor cortex and may have potential for treating a variety of brain disorders. METHODS AND RESULTS A new method of stimulating acti...

Can Wolbachia be used to control malaria?

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted by the infectious bite of Anopheles mosquitoes. Vector control of malaria has predominantly focused on targeting the adult mosquito through insecticides and bed nets. However, current vector control methods are often not sustainable for long periods so alternative methods are needed. A novel biocontrol app...

Attenuation measurement uncertainties caused by speckle statistics.

Attenuation measurements can be derived from the decay of backscattered signal with depth in an inhomogeneous material. In cases such as liver tissue, where many small inhomogeneities are likely to be included in sample volumes defined by pulse and beam widths, Rayleigh statistics describe the random nature of the magnitude of backscattered pressure. The statistics of speckle underlie the uncer...

How traditional symbols can be used as inspiration source in shaping the urban architecture?

This paper explores the developing of how designers can search for inspiration source which provided in the form of traditional elements and archetypes and also their role on idea generation in design from building to urban measure. In order to clarify of this, current study focuses on the Far-East region as an ancient part of the world in which there is a huge number of symbols like well known...

Can simple clinical features be used to identify patients with severe carotid stenosis on Doppler ultrasound?

OBJECTIVES Carotid endarterectomy reduces the risk of stroke in symptomatic patients with severe ipsilateral carotid stenosis. Symptomatic patients should therefore undergo carotid Doppler imaging, but in some centres access to imaging is limited. It was therefore investigated whether simple clinical features alone or in combination could be used to identify patients with severe carotid stenosi...
